San Francisco Explorer Cruise
The Ferry Building Line cruise is now the San Francisco Explorer Cruise and departs from Pier 43-1/2. This profile was written prior to the name change. The content of the tour is the same.
Recently, while taking the Ferry Building Line Cruise [edit: now the San Francisco Explorer Cruise] around San Francisco Bay, I thought about Hockney's pool as I watched pelicans break the water's surface like vertical torpedoes. I took the tour to enjoy the history and the audio commentary. And there I was, contemplating pop art in pelicans.
That experience encapsulated what I like about the cruise. It's multi-faceted -- enhanced by whatever happens that day, whatever observations are unique to your voyage on the Bay.
About the Cruise
Begun in 2006 by Red and White Fleet, the Ferry Building Line [edit: now the San Francisco Explorer Cruise is a 90-minute tour of the Bay with a digital audio guide. You have a choice of three commentaries in several languages. The topics:
- San Francisco Architecture
- Natural History
- The Native American Experience
The Ferry Building Line uses the vessel Harbor King -- the same Harbor King featured in the film "The Birdman of Alcatraz." Harbor King was completely remodeled in 2006 for Red and White cruises.
As the cruise departs, audio tours sync up with the sights and landmarks along the way. You're free to stick with one tour, or switch between the channels to catch a bit of each one. My travel partner and I decided that we'd each listen to one of the tours and split the informational difference over dinner later that evening.
My curiosity got the best of me, however, and I found myself dialing between the commentaries. My 90 minutes became a hybrid tour that covered a discussion of early Ohlone communication, the Yerba Buena lighthouse, and the historical bounty of otters and whales in San Francisco Bay. Once in a while, I just took off my headset, sipped my beverage, and watched the pelicans dive.
Golden Gate Bay Cruise
Golden Gate Bay Cruise - Red and White Fleet
The Golden Gate Bay Cruise -- from Red and White Fleet in San Francisco -- begins at Pier 43-1/2 and takes an hour as it passes under the Golden Gate Bridge, past Angel Island and around Alcatraz. An audio tour on board gives passengers interesting details about landmarks and San Francisco history.
San Francisco Gourmet Chocolate Tour
You know about dark chocolate's antioxidants, and about the serotonin boost your brain enjoys when you bite into a praline. If you live in San Francisco, add one more health benefit to this most beautiful delicacy: the exercise you'll get as you walk from one chocolatier to the next, sampling champagne truffles and sipping gourmet hot cocoa.
Andrea Nadel, a former educator and a chocolate connoisseur, launched The San Francisco Gourmet Chocolate Tour in September of 2007. She takes chocolate aficionados on a three-hour tour of some of the best chocolate venues in San Francisco -- infusing the experience with a bit of San Francisco history and an informal course on chocolate making, buying and tasting.
"I love introducing locals to chocolate names or flavors they've never encountered," says Nadel. "It is also fun to talk about our city's history and landmarks. Many locals are not aware that the whole downtown area where we begin our tour was under water for many years."
And many locals may not know that Etienne Guittard, founder of Guittard Chocolate Company, was listed in the first San Francisco phone book. Or that Domenico Ghirardelli opened his first San Francisco shop downtown, during the Gold Rush years. Nadel enjoys imparting this type of historical context to locals and visitors alike.
San Francisco and chocolate have been entwined from the start, and the love affair persists in the inventive confections and vendors included in this tour. "Today's San Francisco chocolatiers are real innovators," Nadel says, "catering to a city with sophisticated tastes and an appreciation for local, high quality ingredients. Michael Recchiuti is a good example of this. He uses fresh, farmer's market ingredients in his signature chocolate infusions, like the lemon verbena or the tarragon grapefruit truffle."
The San Francisco Gourmet Chocolate Tour starts at the home of Recchiuti -- the San Francisco Ferry Building -- and wends its way through downtown and to Union Square. Along the way, the tour group stops for nourishment at a French chocolate boutique . . . at a newsstand offering more than 225 international bars of chocolate . . . at artisan chocolate makers and other local specialty shops.
"If you love chocolate and want to learn more," Nadel says, "San Francisco is the perfect city." The Gourmet Chocolate Tour will kick start that passion and fine-tune the chocolate vernacular.
